Treatments for erectile dysfunction: what to do

The choice of treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) depends on its cause.

If an underlying medical problem causes the dysfunction, treatment may be the first step towards eliminating the pain.

The treatment can also directly address erectile dysfunction and can be used alone or in conjunction with other conditions.

Lifestyle treatments

Erectile dysfunction is often associated with lifestyle factors.

Some lifestyle changes that may improve erectile dysfunction include weight loss, more exercise, quitting smoking, quitting drinking, and using drugs.

These changes can directly help and improve the outlook for many underlying conditions that can cause erectile dysfunction.

Psychological treatments for erectile dysfunction

When erectile dysfunction has psychological origins, psychotherapy can help; it can help manage stress, anxiety, and other causes of erectile dysfunction.

Additionally, sex therapy can be beneficial for many men with erectile dysfunction.

Sex therapy is a type of treatment that focuses on improving sexual and relationship skills; it does not involve any sexual contact with the therapist.

Sex therapy usually involves homework that can help overcome erection difficulties; you may need to complete these tasks alone or with your sexual partner. This therapy can also include sex education.

A mental health psychologist should provide sex therapy.

Erectile dysfunction drugs

Erectile dysfunction medications can be beneficial; they can be taken alone or in combination with other treatments.

There are currently several medications available to take by mouth; they increase blood flow to the penis by increasing nitric oxide's effect in the body.

Nitric oxide causes the muscles in the penis to relax, which allows the increase in the blood, leading to an erection.

Drugs that increase nitric oxide are called phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors.

Different formulations are available; some are taken daily, others before intercourse.

Which drug is right for each of us depends on a variety of factors.

Currently, there are three approved drugs in this class: Super p Force , Fildena 100mg , Fildena 50

PDE inhibitors only work in 30-40% of men with erectile dysfunction; sometimes, they don't work because they are not used correctly.

Taking one of these drugs will not be enough to get an erection; it is necessary to have sexual thoughts or stimulate the penis. These drugs only help to have sexual arousal.

Furthermore, these drugs are not safe for all men; should not be used by those who take:

• nitrate medications, such as those prescribed for angina

• anticoagulants, such as warfarin

• alpha-blockers, for an enlarged prostate

• blood pressure medications

They should also be avoided by anyone who has had a stroke, heart disease, uncontrolled hypertension, and diabetes.

Injectable drugs

Other drugs have a more direct effect on penile blood flow; these drugs are injected directly into the penis base and are very effective ways to achieve an erection.

The drugs used in this way are papaverine, alprostadil, phentolamine.

Alprostadil can also be inserted into the urethra as a suppository; the urethra is the channel through which urine and sperm are expelled from the penis.

Testosterone

Low testosterone levels can cause erectile dysfunction; testosterone replacement therapy can help.

Surgery

Several types of surgeries can be used to treat erectile dysfunction;

the most commonly used is to install a pending implant, which can also be used to fix damaged blood vessels.

Penile implants

There are two types of penile implants; one is an inflatable rod; the other is a semi-rigid rod.

Both types of implants are inserted into the corpus cavernosum of the penis; these are the regions that usually fill with blood during an erection.

Once the penile prosthesis is inserted, there is no turning back. These implants must be used to achieve an erection and are usually not considered until evidence that other treatment options have failed.

Blood Vessel Surgery

Blood vessel surgery is not a common practice; however, this type of surgery can replace or repair damaged blood vessels in the penis.

It is useful for increasing blood flow and blocking the veins so that the blood does not drain too quickly from the penis.
